What is Oracle Linux?
Oracle Linux (formerly called Oracle Enterprise Linux, which was released in 2006) is an open source operating system available under the GNU General Public License (GPL) and is available for free download through Oracle E-Delivery . Customers can purchase support for Oracle Linux through the Oracle Unbreakable Linux Support Program.
Oracle Linux offers two Linux kernels to choose from:
The Red Hat Compatible Kernel, for those who prefer strict Red Hat compatibility or
The new Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel, for those who want to leverage the latest features in Linux and boost performance and scalability.
What is Oracle’s Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel for Linux?
On Sept. 19, 2010, Oracle announced the new Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel, a fast, modern, reliable Linux kernel that is optimized for Oracle software and hardware. Oracle Linux combined with Oracle’s new Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel brings the latest Linux innovations to market delivering extreme performance, advanced scalability and reliability for enterprise applications. Because Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel doesn’t require you to reinstall the operating system, existing applications run unchanged.
The Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel is now the only Linux kernel Oracle recommends for use with not only Oracle software for all enterprise applications running on Linux.
Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel is available for x86-64 servers.
