Use and maintenance of the telescope

The binoculars are small and compact, and what you see is a positive image. Coupled with a wide field of view, it is much more convenient to use than small astronomical telescopes. However, binoculars also have shortcomings, such as small diameter, low magnification, and not suitable for photographic observation. Only by exploiting the strengths and avoiding weaknesses can it exert its maximum benefit.

Observation projects that can make use of the advantages of binoculars can recommend the following: variable star photometry, comet observation, search for galactic nova, satellite observation, solar and lunar eclipse, lunar occultation and asteroid occultation, daytime search for the shortest moon age Crescent moon and Venus, look for Mercury.

A 50mm binocular can see 7 large planets and 5 or 6 asteroids except Pluto, as well as more than 30 Messier objects (brighter than 7), and an average of 2 to 3 planets appear every year Bright comet. Many binoculars stargazing guide books have been published abroad, all of which are highly practical. For example, “Binoculars Astronomy” by American James Muirden introduces about 300 observation targets for each constellation.

It is easier to observe celestial bodies with low elevation angles by hand-held binoculars, but after more than 10 minutes, you will get tired. It is best to keep your elbows on a low wall for observation, or against your chest, so as to reduce shaking. Sitting in a chair with backrest is more comfortable than standing. To observe high-elevation celestial bodies, one has to lie on a lounger. If you use binoculars to watch the stars while standing or sitting on your back, your arms, shoulders and neck will soon become tired and sore. These signs will make your eye sharpness lose at least half a magnitude, and may miss short-term occultations or diffuse dark comets.

Equipping the binoculars with a sturdy ground-level tripod can relieve the above drawbacks. However, ordinary tripods are not convenient for observing the target of the zenith area. Some foreign astronomy enthusiasts have designed and manufactured binocular brackets fixed on the recliner, or recliners with binocular brackets, and various other ingenious devices that can make you look up or down conveniently. If you have mechanical processing and woodworking skills, you can make them according to your needs.

Binoculars can also be equipped with a projection device to observe the sun, but the lens cover should be covered within a few minutes of observation to let the internal heat dissipate.

The maintenance of the double mirror is also relatively simple. It should be placed upright in normal times, and be careful when using it to avoid displacement of the prism due to shock. If there is dust on the lens, try to use a rubber blower to blow it off with your hands. Use less flannel or lens paper to prevent the lens from being roughened or damaging the coating. Those who have not mastered the maintenance technology of optical instruments, do not disassemble the binoculars by themselves, because all the optical parts of it have been adjusted before leaving the factory. If it is disassembled, it is difficult to restore it under amateur conditions.

When stargazing at night, the binoculars often get dew. It should be placed in a cool and ventilated place during the day to let it dry naturally. In order to prevent mold from forming on the lens, it is best to store the binoculars in a drying box. A tin biscuit box with good airtightness can also be used. Several packs of desiccant are placed in the box, which is usually updated every three or four months.
