The loss of the two of the three seats for the SP

This shift in the Muslim mood can upset the Samajwadi apple cart in the Assembly elections in 2017 if steps are not immediately taken to restore the faith of the community in the party. The results also indicate that the SP can no longer take Muslim votes for granted because the party has been made to bite dust on seats that have a dominant Muslim population. RLSP MP Arun Sinha celebrates with party leaders in Patna on Tuesday after the party candidate’s thumping victory. The SP could retain only the Bikapur (Faizabad) seat in central UP but lost both its seats, Deoband and Muzaffarnagar, in western UP. -PTI The results of byelections in three Assembly seats seem to have rung the warning bell for the ruling Samajwadi Party. The Congress got a pleasant surprise in Deoband in Saharanpur where its candidate Maviya Ali won the seat with a margin of 3,559 votes. The biggest setback for the ruling Samajwadi Party came from western UP where the BJP won the prestigious Muzaffarnagar seat with a margin of 7,352 votes. The loss of the two of the three seats for the SP may not have much of an impact on its numerical strength in the state assembly but it will definitely have a dampening effect on the party workers. The BJP also won the mayoral polls in Ghaziabad with a thumping margin. The Congress has wrested this seat from the SP. The BJP’s victory in this communally sensitive seat indicates the extent of polarisation of voters that has taken place. The BSP did not contest the byelections. In the three seats held by the Samajwadis, the party could retain only one while one each was won by the BJP and the Congress. Despite a low-key campaign that was bereft of senior party leaders, the Congress managed to consolidate Muslim votes in its favour and won the seat. The BJP’s Kapil Agarwal defeated the SP’s Gaurav Swarup. Muzaffarnagar has a sizeable Muslim population that is still reeling under the impact of the 2013 riots that left 63 dead and over 50,000 displaced. The results of byelections in three Assembly seats seem to have rung the warning bell for the ruling Samajwadi Party. The BJP had run a high-voltage campaign in the constituency with its leaders repeatedly reminding voters of the post-riot situation. Surprisingly, the BJP has slipped to the third position in Faizabad while the AIMIM which made its political debut in these byelections, China Hingess Toilet Seats ranked fourth with a slender margin between the votes polled by both the parties. In Bikapur, the SP candidate Anand Sen Yadav managed to retain the seat with a margin of 6,420 votes while Munna Singh Chauhan of the Rashtriya Lok Dal ranked second.
