Municipal corporations are planning to set up more waste-to-energy plants to generate power from municipal solid waste (MSW). “The plan for construction of the new plant at Okhla will be finalised soon. One plant at Narela-Bawana is about to be commissioned.The waste-to-energy plants process garbage into refused-derived fuel (RDF) in the first phase.The north and south Delhi municipal corporations have planned to set up three more such plants.. “We will be approaching landowning agencies to set up the waste-to-energy plant,” he added. If every thing goes according to plan, in the coming years at least 8,000 metric tonnes (MT) of municipal solid waste generated daily would go to waste-to-energy plants, instead of sanitary landfill sites, and be used for power generation.SDMC’s leader of house Subhash Arya said one proposed waste-to-energy plant would be constructed at Okhla. “Subject to necessary administrative and environmental clearances, a similar capacity plant is under consideration.
The soon-to-be-commissioned Narela- Bawana plant will use 1,300-MT waste for generating 24 MW power. If the proposed plant is constructed, the two plants together will consume at least 2,600-MT garbage, each day,” he added. In the second phase, RDF is incinerated to produce green electricity.
