However, with the advent of machine weaving during the industrial revolution, rugs and carpet were made more for practical reasons rather than just as decorations. There were many different types of rug and if you look back at history you will find that monarchs, sultans and the wealthy had some very special rugs made for their homes or rather, their palaces. Home decor was a luxury that few could afford and most families were more worried about putting food on their tables than they were about making their homes look nice. There are still hand made rugs available to buy and these tend to be made using old fashioned techniques.
When rugs were first woven, the wool of sheep or goat semi-worsted yarn were the likely sources. Rugs are woven and weaving has been done for thousands of years. These rugs are generally made from wool on hessian backs and are hard wearing, so will stand up to the everyday rigours of daily family life. Each pattern has a meaning or a story attached to it.
