Creating Patterns To Remember: The Textile Design Process

Millions of people all over the world find themselves utterly fascinated by fashion design. However, a surprisingly small amount of those people would probably be able to identify or explain the process of textile design, or even tell you what it means! Textiles (or knitted, woven or printed fabrics) are necessary in the process of clothing design, and before the textiles are stitched together to create garments, they must be thoroughly thought up and designed first. In order to create a well-made textile, the designer must have a thorough understanding of the materials they will be working with and their different processes. This includes weaving, knitting, yarn-making, dyeing and finishing. The first step is to conceptualize a fabric type along with a pattern design. A textile creator must first visualize the pattern that he or she wishes to create. Once they have thought of the pattern, colors and fabric type, it’s time to begin creating. The creator sketches his or her design idea onto a special type of graph paper called point paper. The point papers are designed to guide fabric weavers working on creating the textile by weaving the fabric out of yarn on a loom.
