We are agitating against the policy of intimidation pursued

Amid the din, the Lok Sabha on Wednesday witnessed a slugfest between the Congress and the government, which accused the principal Opposition party of “threatening the judiciary through disruptions in the Parliament”. While the Congress accused the Narendra Modi government of political vendetta, Union parliamentary affairs minister M. Venkaiah Naidu retorted that the Congress had been vindictive to “jail BJP chief Amit Shah and summon Mr Modi to a police station in the past”. After Question Hour, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan allowed Congress leader in the House Mallikarjun Kharge to speak on the issue on which party MPs were agitating. “We are agitating against the policy of intimidation pursued by the Modi government against the Opposition. There are attempts to crush those who have proven records and credible. Those parties who are not toeing the government line are being targeted by the government,” said Mr Kharge. The Congress MPs stayed in the well of the House throughout the day and raised slogans against the NDA government and Mr Modi. Incidentally, the Prime Minister was also present in the House during Question Hour. Joining the issue with Mr Kharge, a charged up Mr Naidu accused the Congress of seeking to “freeze” Parliament, progress and the Modi government. “Who is dictatorial These 10-15 MPs who are not allowing Parliament not to function… how far they will continue to disrupt the Parliament. Is it democracy ” retorted Mr Naidu.

At one point, the Speaker told the agitating MPs, “I am warning you”. “Now, you want to threaten the Chair,” said Ms Mahajan. TMC MPs extended support to the Congress MPs. Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha witnessed repeated adjournments over the National Herald issue as Congress members shouted slogans “Modi teri tanashahi nahi chalegi” and the Treasury benches hit back saying the Opposition party was trying to “threaten” the courts and blocking the country’s growth path by not letting key bills passed. At one point of time, BJD members also trooped into the Well carrying placards opposing the multi-purpose Polavaram irrigation project. The House was repeatedly adjourned before the final adjournment at around 3.25 PM. Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad accused the government of targeting opposition parties, including the Congress, by opening cases against them.Referring to National Herald case, he said a notice had been sent by Enforcement Directorate (ED) to the trustees of the “non-profit making” body.“The ED, however, later saw reason” and its Director decided to close the matter in August this year, he said. But soon after, the government replaced the ED Director, Mr Azad said and alleged that the case was then again opened on the directions of the government and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy.

Asserting that Congress has full faith in judiciary, he said it was the government’s actions of opening cases against opposition leaders which had forced them to raise voice in the temple of democracy when democracy itself was being “murdered and slaughtered”. He also alleged that money-laundering was made out in certain “revelations” linked with Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and Vyapam scam and claimed the government was only interested in targeting Congress and other opposition parties.Rejecting allegations, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the National Herald issue is a legal matter and Congress “should fight it out in court” instead of raking it up in China Aluminum extrusions profile manufacturers Parliament. He asked the Congress “not to threaten the courts through the Parliament”.Mr Naqvi said the opposition party was trying to “scare” the country by disrupting the House as it apprehended that the court verdict may go against its “Yuvraj” (Rahul Gandhi), who, along with Sonia Gandhi, has been summoned by a Delhi court.Contending that it is not a national issue but one which pertains to “two individuals”, Mr Naqvi said the Congress was “hijacking” Parliament by raking up the matter.
