To eliminate the battery itself as causing the short

Having an expensive laptop that can no longer be taken on business trips or out of the house because the battery won’t charge can be a major source of frustration for anyone. Whether it’s an Apple, a Sony, an HP, or a Toshiba notebook, troubleshooting the issue of a dead, unusable battery

can be difficult on your own. In this article though, we’ll focus on Toshiba notebooks and what steps you can take when your Toshiba laptop won’t charge the battery. The first step is to deduce precisely what component of the notebook is the cause of the problem. In modern laptops, the issue could stem from a number of different things, including the battery itself, the external power supply, a short in the charging cord, or an internal malfunction within the computer’s motherboard. To eliminate the battery itself as causing the short, remove the battery, but keep the AC charger plugged into the wall outlet. If the computer still powers on as normal, but the battery will not take a charge, you likely will have to replace the battery. Online vendors as well as the manufacturer itself can supply OEM replacements, or if your laptop is still under warranty, contact Toshiba to have the company ship you a replacement. If your computer will not turn on, regardless of whether the battery is installed or not, you most likely have a fault in either the power supply unit, charging cord, or another component within the laptop. Be sure to check the computer on multiple wall outlets, in case you happen to be connected to a dead or faulty socket. If the wall outlet is definitely not causing the issue, we’ll need to try to rule out the charger itself as being part of the problem. See if a friend or computer repair shop can lend you a Toshiba cord that you can try, as long as the voltage is the Spiral NoteBook Factory same and the amperage is equal to or greater than the amperage printed on the power supply unit. If the computer powers on with a different cable and PSU, then that is your problem, and it will need to be replaced. Check whether your laptop is under warranty, and contact Toshiba for support. If you are no longer under warranty, online retailers can offer the OEM charger you’ll need. Find the part number printed on the PSU, and search for it online or at your local computer shop. If neither a new cable nor a new battery fixes your problem, then the situation is a little more troublesome. The problem is inside your computer, either a short in the motherboard or perhaps a loose or broken power connector near where the cord plugs into the laptop. Check to be sure that the connection between the cord and the laptop is secure, as sometimes with repeated use the AC port can become loose and fall back inside the computer. If this is the case, it can often be fixed by taking apart the laptop and manually tightening the connection. More likely though, it is a short within the motherboard. These problems can cost a few hundred dollars to diagnose and fix, so hopefully you are under warranty and can have the notebook repaired at no cost.
